TL;DR: Spermidine is one of the more promising natural autophagy inducers. Human trials are small but suggest immune and cardiovascular benefits. Food sources include wheat germ, aged cheese, mushrooms and legumes. Supplements usually provide 1–10 mg/day.
Spermidine and Autophagy for Longevity: 2026 Evidence Update
What wheat-germ extract, vaccine trials and food sources tell us about spermidine and healthy ageing.
🐢 Tortoise Wisdom"Spermidine is interesting because it has food, safety and early human trial data all pointing the same direction."

View on Amazon →1. Mechanism
Spermidine induces autophagy, the cellular recycling process that declines with age. It also supports mitochondrial function and may reduce inflammation.
2. Human Evidence
- Oxford vaccine trial: older adults taking spermidine-rich wheat germ extract showed improved vaccine response markers (read our analysis).
- Cardiovascular: small trials suggest improvements in blood pressure and arterial stiffness.
- Cognitive: very early data; not conclusive.
3. Food Sources
- Wheat germ and wheat germ oil
- Aged cheese
- Mushrooms
- Legumes, especially soy and peas
- Natto (fermented soybeans)
4. Supplement Guidance
Look for standardised spermidine content. 1–3 mg/day is common; higher doses have been used in trials but data are limited. See our spermidine buying guide.
5. Safety
Food-level intake is safe. Supplement safety data are short-term. Because polyamines support cell growth, people with active cancer should seek oncology advice.
