Magnesium malate is a compound of one magnesium ion and two malate molecules. Malic acid is an intermediary metabolite in the Krebs (citric acid) cycle, the pathway cells use to generate ATP. The combination is marketed for people with fatigue, muscle pain or fibromyalgia.

Compared with other magnesium salts:

  • Magnesium oxide: cheap, poorly absorbed, strongly laxating.
  • Magnesium citrate: well absorbed, useful for constipation, can be laxating.

The energy argument for magnesium malate rests on two pillars:
