TL;DR: A landmark 2023 Science study showed that taurine levels fall with age in mice, monkeys and humans. Supplementing taurine in middle-aged mice extended healthy lifespan and improved muscle, bone, immune and metabolic markers. Human data are still early, but the paper put taurine back on the longevity map.
Taurine Deficiency & Ageing: What the 2023 Science Paper Found
The molecule nobody talks about โ until it quietly disappears.
1. What Is Taurine and Why Should We Care?
Taurine is a sulfur-containing amino acid found in muscle, brain, heart and immune cells. Unlike protein-building amino acids, taurine is "conditionally essential" โ most people make some, but diet (meat, seafood, dairy) supplies the rest.
For decades taurine was famous mainly for its role in energy drinks. Then the 2023 Science study by Singh et al. revealed something surprising: circulating taurine drops dramatically with age, and restoring it in older animals changed multiple hallmarks of ageing.
2. The 2023 Science Paper in Plain English
Singh et al. measured taurine in mice, monkeys and humans. In all three species, blood taurine was lower in older individuals than in younger ones.
They then gave taurine to middle-aged mice for the rest of their lives. Compared with untreated mice, the taurine group showed:
- Longer median lifespan in both females and males.
- Better muscle strength and coordination.
- Higher bone density and less bone loss.
- Improved immune-cell function.
- Reduced body weight and better glucose control.
- Less cellular senescence and DNA damage markers.
Middle-aged rhesus monkeys given taurine for six months also showed improvements in body weight, bone density, immune markers and metabolic health. No serious side effects were reported in either species.
Key caveat: Mice are not humans. Lifespan extension in rodents has failed to translate before. Human trials are the only way to know if this works in people.
3. How Might Taurine Influence Ageing?
The authors suggested several mechanisms, all of which need more study:
- Antioxidant and mitochondrial protection: taurine helps buffer oxidative stress in mitochondria.
- Improved nutrient sensing: taurine interacts with insulin and mTOR-related pathways.
- Reduced inflammation: lower inflammatory markers were seen in treated animals.
- Better bile-acid metabolism: taurine conjugates bile acids, which affect fat and cholesterol handling.
4. Taurine Supplements in the UK: Practical Notes
Taurine supplements are widely available in the UK as capsules or powders, often vegan-friendly and synthetically produced. Typical doses range from 500 mg to 3,000 mg per day. It has a long safety record in clinical and consumer use.
What we don't yet know:
- The optimal human dose for longevity effects, if any.
- Whether raising blood taurine in already-healthy adults produces meaningful benefit.
- Long-term interactions with medications or conditions.

Does taurine slow ageing in humans?
No human lifespan trial has proven that taurine slows ageing. The 2023 Science paper showed that taurine levels fall with age in mice, monkeys and humans, and that taurine supplementation improved health markers in mice and monkeys. Human trials are needed.
Why do taurine levels drop with age?
The exact reason is still being studied. Diet, reduced bile-acid conjugation, changes in gut bacteria and lower synthesis may all contribute.
Is taurine safe to supplement?
Taurine is generally well tolerated at typical doses (500โ3,000 mg/day) and has a long safety record in energy drinks and clinical use. People with kidney or liver disease should consult a clinician first.
How much taurine do humans need?
There is no official Recommended Daily Allowance for taurine because humans can synthesise it. Dietary intake varies widely, from near zero in vegans to several hundred milligrams a day in meat and seafood eaters.
